For Windows 3.x users, Before you can run any TCP/IP-based software such as Netscape and
Internet Explorer, you will need to install the TCP/IP Stack first. Winsock is the most
popular TCP/IP stack available on the market. The following will guide you step by step to
install Trumpet Winsock on your Windows 3.x system. Installing Hardware
Install your modem and its driver as instructed in your
modem's installation guide. Take note on which communication port your modem is
connecting, this information is required to configure the Winsock software later.
Downloading Trumpet Winsock
Software from Netfront
You may download a copy of the Trumpet Winsock Software by following these steps.
1. Open 'Windows Terminal' (in the Windows 'Accessories' folder)
2. Goto 'Settings' -> 'Communication' to select the communication port that your are
connecting your modem and set the corresponding baud rate and other variables accordingly.

3. Dial 3001-3579
4. After connection, input your username and password
5. Choose 1. Shell Login
6. Input username and password again
7. Enter the command "cd /home/ftp/pub/win31/winsock" at the command prompt
8. Enter "sx -eb winsock.exe"
9. From the Terminal Window Menu, choose 'Transfer' -> 'Receive Binary File'
10. Type a temporary file path in the filename field, such as
"c:\temp\winsock.exe"
11. The file will be transferred and saved to your hard disk
Installing the Trumpet
Winsock Software
1. When the downloading has finished, exit the 'Terminal'
program and open DOS command prompt
2. At the DOS prompt, make a new directory for the Winsock software, type "md
c:\winsock"
3. type "cd c:\winsock"
4. install the software by executing c:\temp\winsock
5. Exit the DOS Prompt and go back to the Window's 'Program Manager'
6. Goto 'File' -> 'New' -> 'Program_Group' to create a new program group, set the
description as "NETfront Internet Services"
7. Now use your mouse to open the newly created 'NETfront Internet Services' group and
then goto 'File' -> 'New' -> 'Program Item' to create the Winsock icon, use the
browse button to select the "c:\winsock\tcpman.exe" as 'command line', and set
'working directory' as "c:\winsock"
Configuring Trumpet Winsock
We have pre-configured 'Trumpet Winsock' for it to work
with our network. However, you are still required to configure those modem related
settings (communication port, baud rate, hardware handshaking) to make it works with your
PC.
1. Goto 'Settings' -> 'Setup' to set these values.
2. Set the 'SLIP port' to the communication port number that you are connecting your modem
3. Set the 'Baud rate' to the maximum speed of your modem (38400 or 57600 will works for
most models)
4. Set the Check-box 'Hardware handshaking' if your modem support so.

Dialing to NETfront using
Trumpet Winsock
1. Start the Winsock program by double clicking the icon
created in the last section
2. If it is the first time you start Winsock, it will prompt you for the telephone number.
Enter 30013579, username, and password.
3. Now the Winsock will try to connect your PC to the Internet. If everything goes right,
there will be a line "Your IP address is 202.81.xxx.xxx" display at the bottom
of the Winsock window. Now your are on-line and you can minimize your Winsock window and
proceed to start Internet applications such as Netscape and Eudora.
4. When you have finished and would like to disconnect, simply goto 'Dialing' -> 'Bye'
in the Winsock menu bar to disconnect your modem.
